At Tamworth Building Supplies, we have over 25 years’ worth of rich company history, all because of your support. 

 

We were formed in 1990 when the Managing Director Phil Anderson and 12 other people got together to start the business. At around this time, Thibaults Hardware–who had most of the trade business in Tamworth–had sold their business to BBC Hardware. A lot of builders were unhappy with the range of merchandise being offered by BBC and were pushing for someone to go into competition with them. Phil saw the opportunity and founded the business. 

 

Trading commenced on 8th November 1990 at the humble rented premises at the corner of Jewry and Avro streets Taminda with just seven staff, three of whom still work for the company. The store was well-supported by Tamworth builders and business was brisk from the beginning. 

 

The business continued to grow as builders from outside of Tamworth started to deal with the company. Soon the store was delivering goods as far south as the Upper Hunter and as far north as Moree. In 1995, it was decided to open a store in Armidale to take advantage of an opening in the market there. Obviously, the name Tamworth Building Supplies did not suit, so it was called Armidale Building Supplies and it opened in a small, rented premises in Mott Street with an initial staff of just one. 

 

As the business has grown, so has the demand from customers other than builders. The general public has also realised that TBS and ABS carry a broad range of merchandise at great prices and if builders shop there, then it has to be good. Today, it’s the biggest independent hardware business in New England and North West of New South Wales. We employ around 60 people and are looking to grow the business even further.
